Section # 35 Gzira, Ta' Xbiex, Msida & Pieta
Today Alfred and Jasmine Grech are taking us on a tour around three villages which are in the inner part of Marsamxette Harbor. First we are visiting the Parish Church of Gzira and the old theater 'Orpheum'. Going by the sea, it is interesting to see the monument which the people of Gzira erected to Turu Rizzo who was a very good swimmer who in his days, performed great feats. As we go along the seafront we cross over the small bridge to visit Manoel Island which is a yacht repair center. But while we are there we take a look at the 'Duck Village' and the remains of the Fort Manoel.
Then we go to the inner most part of the harbor to visit Msida. The church is decorated for the feast with red damask. In the big Square in front of the church there is the famous Monument in honor to the Maltese Worker; this was made by Anton Agius. Walking again along the sea-side we can see a traditional competition which we call 'Gostra'. The numerous boats of all types moored all around the creek lead to Pieta village.
Between Msida and Gzira there is Ta' Xbiex which is a small, yet very nice place with big houses, villas and also embassies of foreign countries. The Black Pearl which is an old wooden yacht used as a small restaurant is a 'must see' in Ta' Xbiex. But the main attraction in this area is the yacht marina which extends from Manoel Island, all along Ta' Xbiex to Msida.
As we go along this excursion we are accompanied by soft music which makes the tour more enjoyable.
